All Chelsea fans across the globe were extremely happy over the signing of the Spanish striker Alvaro Morata. Morata has since his signing for the blues featured in two preseason matches in China, coming in as a substitute against Bayern Munich and started against Inter Milan as Chelsea lose 2 goals to 1 in their final preseason tour in China. Morata is yet to register a goal for the blues as everybody believes he is still settling down with the blues. But of course, there had been side talks over his sucess especially with the jinx that appears to be on the no 9 jersey which he was handed in Chelsea. Taking a look at the 4 of the previous players with the no 9 jersey could send doubts in the heart of Chelsea fans. Here are some of the previous players:
FERNANDO TORRES: who also was a record signing of his time from Liverpool, worth 50 million pounds then. His unstoppable scoring prowess in Liverpool forced Chelsea to make a mouth-watering bid for him. But on arrival, the Spanish player was handed the no 9 jersey and he subsequently failed to perform as expected in Chelsea before making a move away from Chelsea.
RADAMEL FALCAO: the Colombian forward would never be forgotten by the blues when he scored a first half hat-trick against the blues in the UEFA Super cup back in 2012. This and the danger posed by this striker made the Blues board sign him. He was also handed the no 9 jersey but managed to score a goal in 12 appearances, a stat that is very bad for a striker.
FRANCO DI SANTO: though a teenager, Di Santo was also given a chance by Felipe Scolari and was subsequently handed the no 9 jersey. Unfortunately, he failed to score a single goal in 16 appearances before he was loaned out of the club.
MATEJA KEZMAN: a 2004 signing by Mourinho, came to the club with a goal scoring spree from PSV. He was also given the no 9 jersey but also managed to score 7 goals in that season.
Now all eyes on Alvaro Morata, can he turn things around? Can he break the Chelsea no 9 curse? Will he bag more than 20 goals in the coming season? NEXT SEASON WILL TELL.
